Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter

Essential maintenance points to review before colder weather arrives.

1 – Tyres

To maintain grip on wet and icy winter roads, tyres need sufficient tread depth and the recommended pressure—not too high or too low. Do not deliberately reduce tyre pressure. In areas with snowfall, use winter tyres with cold-resistant rubber and adequate tread depth.

2 – Engine oil

Low temperatures thicken oil. Oil that is overdue for a change may provide insufficient lubrication, particularly during a cold start, allowing the oil film on cylinder and piston surfaces to break down and causing abnormal wear. Ensure the oil meets the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

3 – Bodywork and paint

Road salt and de-icing solutions can cause corrosion, particularly on aluminium components, and wear the vehicle’s paintwork. Protecting the bodywork and paint is important in addressing these effects.

4 – Wipers and washer fluid

Wiper blades that work well before winter can wear after use in snow and ice and may need replacement. Top up or replace washer fluid with a winter formula that resists freezing. Otherwise, the spray nozzles may freeze and stop working. Suitable fluid helps prevent freezing, assists with clearing ice from the glass and reduces wiper wear.

5 – Belts and hoses

Make time to inspect your vehicle before harsh winter conditions. Engine belts and hoses should be in good condition. Cold weather can make them more brittle; cracks, deformation and breaks can impair operation and leave the vehicle stranded.

6 – Antifreeze

Frozen engine coolant can cause irreparable damage to the engine block. Antifreeze protection should account for the lowest temperatures expected in your area. Have the freezing point of coolant added in previous years measured and checked.

7 – Fuel tank

Moisture can accumulate in the fuel tank during winter and freeze at sub-zero temperatures, potentially contributing to wear and starting problems. Keeping the tank above half full during winter can help reduce this effect.
